Pen, ink & acrylic - Method Man-Ol' Dirty Bastard-Inspectah Deck-Ghostface Killah-Masta Killah-Raekwon-U-God-GZA-RZAThe way Wu-Tang flipped and stylised their influences rooted in Kung-fu films, NOGE and comic books is straight up inspiring. It made the development of this edition a hands-on learning process—digging into the history, experimenting with the material, and figuring out how to bring them together for this unique print.
Commissioned for the UK rap magazine Hip-Hop Connection (Issue 187), this piece carries added historical significance as a document of that era. Illustrated in pen and ink and acrylic, it remains a standout work from a distinctive period in the culture.
“Shaolin shadow boxing, and the Wu-Tang sword style. If what you say is true, the Shaolin and the Wu-Tang could be dangerous”
The use of Xuan paper is a simple thread connecting to the traditional Chinese handmade paper, originating in the Tang Dynasty over a thousand years ago. Beyond being a medium for artistic expression it is also of huge cultural significance to traditional Chinese culture.
Woodblock printing has a long and rich tradition in Chinese culture, craftsmanship, and folk art, serving as a means of sharing knowledge, ideas, and artistic expression. The earliest surviving examples of woodblock-printed illustrations and texts date to the Tang Dynasty (618–907).
