With six years having passed, a lot had happened — the loss of my father being one of several life-changing experiences.
I continued creating, although I was second-guessing everything. The work culture I had become accustomed to refused to show any empathy for my own needs. I needed space and time to slowly accept what had happened and rediscover the joy of drawing again, but eventually my body forced me to stop.
An abscess beneath my wisdom tooth had been removed, but toxins from the infection spread into my lung and rib cavity, causing sepsis. I was taken to intensive care at the Bristol Royal Infirmary and was saved by the incredible surgeons who cleared the infection from the area before fitting an aspirator to further drain the infection.
During my time in hospital, I was able to draw — just simple doodles — but I can’t even begin to explain how healing it felt.
I learned that it wasn’t really about being present with art alone. It was about the people surrounding me and their presence. It was an awakening of sorts, and I wanted those who were with me to know how much I valued them.
The idiom "count your blessings" took on a profound meaning. I had everything I needed to grow.
When I arrived home, I knew I had this particular artwork waiting for me to continue with. But now there was no anxiety, no stress — only gratitude for life.
Creativity can contribute positively to the healing process after a life-changing experience. If possible, be patient and allow yourself to slowly reconnect with the joy that mark-making can bring.
I loved creating this piece. It may not represent the most obvious interpretation of love, but it expresses the truth of how I felt.
The original grey-tone poster remains the closest to my original vision. The watercolour version was a later reinterpretation, which I think looks amazing.
The watercolour concept was originally presented to me by the publisher GB Eye. This particular digital colour version, however, was created by Vince, an artist within my family. Hopefully, I’ll be able to share some of Vince’s artwork in the future.
