Rock, Punk, and Hip-Hop — DIY culture feels like the nucleus to me.

I’m sure artists and creators alike will understand the overwhelming need to express themselves through whatever channel is available. Sometimes limited opportunity can produce incredibly dynamic work.

This piece was my narrow opportunity to focus all of my energy into a single artwork. The opportunity came as a result of another piece I’d created with no purpose other than simply to create. With little time to overthink, I reached out to friends and friends of friends who had a deep understanding and passion for classic rock, heavy metal, commercial rock, and the evolving rock scene as a whole.

Similar to myself with Hip Hop, the sources for my references came from people who had collections of metal publications by the crate load. After a couple of weeks preparing reference material — in between work, family, and friends — I moved back and forth between a couple of places, with the artwork safely stored in a protective portfolio, alongside the simple tools I worked with: Burnt Sienna ink, acrylic, drawing pens, a pencil, an eraser, and a craft knife.

Working across different spaces gave the whole process a sense of urgency — but an enjoyable one. Seeing your project in different environments keeps the decision-making spontaneous and fresh.

Nirvana were already getting a lot of play from me at the time, as were Pixies, although they weren’t included in the piece. If the opportunity arose, I’d happily add a variety of artists and bands that weren’t originally featured.

If there are any underground, classic, metal, grunge, or punk legends that truly embody the raw spirit and attitude, please hit me up with a couple of names.
