I was always aware of how music and sound could affect my perception, so eventually I wanted to balance those frequencies within the work itself through Grado SR80’s.
The low end had to feel solid, confident, and deep. For me, it’s the driving force that grounds a track — often the most aggressive element too. You only have to feel the toxic weight of the 808.
The mid-range had to be clear, precise, and natural. When I’m focused on drawing for long periods of time, the detail within a voice or recording inspires me to pursue the same level of care in the artwork, because to someone else, those details may matter just as much as they do to me.
The high frequencies bring life to the low end, like stars scattered across a night sky.
The electronic sounds of early Hip Hop were often influenced by Kraftwerk, and that influence appears within this piece through the breakdown of the record design as it transitions into the stylised grey block design.
I often think about Berlin and the influence its culture has had on the art created there.
There’s also something powerful in the contrast between the soul preserved on vinyl and the colder technological engineering required to reproduce it. One carries warmth and emotion; the other delivers precision.
This piece brings together the producers — the sonic architects — alongside the visual language of vinyl design itself, celebrating recorded music and the birth of my son.
